What Bristol Audiologists Check for Earwax and Infection

You might expect an ear health examination to include a look inside the ear canal. And you’d be right! But there’s more to it than that.

Looking Inside the Ear Canal

During an ear health check the audiologist uses an otoscope to look inside the ear canal and check the colour of any wax, the position of any wax in the ear and check the ears for any signs of redness or swelling. He will also look at the eardrum and check that it is intact and looking healthy.

Spotting Infection Versus Wax

While wax blockage of the ear canal and an infection may both present with a reduction in hearing, there are some marked differences between them that will become apparent during an examination. The appearance of wax in the ear canal is usually brown or yellow in colour. In the case of an active infection the ear canal may appear red and have discharge within it. The eardrum may also appear cloudy.

Checking Pressure Behind the Eardrum

Tympanometry involves releasing a small amount of air into the ear and measuring the movement of the eardrum. This can reveal if there is any fluid behind the eardrum. Many cases of fluid in the middle ear occur as a result of a cold and may require monitoring.

Whether Wax Can Be Removed Safely

Some types of wax and its position within the ear can be removed in a clinic by the Audiologist however other types of wax may be best removed by a specialist. This is outlined in the NHS guidance on how earwax build-up is diagnosed and treated.

When a Referral Is Needed

Any signs of infection, a perforated eardrum or suspected middle ear disease during an ear health check can result in a referral to your GP or to see an ENT specialist. For Audiologist Bristol, visit www.imperialhearing.com/audiologist-near-me/bristol.
