What Is Orthodontics?

What is orthodontics? Orthodontic dentistry is a specialised area of dentistry which involves the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and correction of misaligned jaw patterns and malpositioned teeth. The word “orthodontics” derives from the Greek words “ord,” meaning right, and “dent,” meaning tooth.

Orthodontics can either take the form of surgical procedures or the use of non-surgical orthodontic treatments, such as braces and Invisalign. Invisalign is a set of clear, removable braces, which are specially made for each patient’s teeth. The aligners are adjusted and aligned via the dentist’s office, without the patient having to visit an orthodontic specialist. Braces are the most common form of orthodontic treatment. They are made of hard plastic which is placed over the teeth, over a period of two to three months. Find out more about orthodontics like All on 4 dental implants cost at a site like Arnica

The main benefits of invisalign and braces are the speed and invisibility of the operation; the fact that they provide permanent correction; the ability to see how much braces are affecting the patient’s smile and mouth shape, without requiring a face to face consultation with the orthodontist; and the comfort provided by the braces. However, many people who have braces or invisalign still need some type of orthodontic treatment to improve their appearance and function of their teeth. Some dental surgeons offer in-office general dentistry, which includes braces, veneers, bonding and more. The patient should schedule an appointment to discuss their options.
