Retirement is a time to spend on you – after having had to work for years, this is finally your opportunity to relax and take a bit of time to do the things in life that you enjoy. When we are running around and working hard it is easy to neglect our health, but retirement gives you the opportunity to focus on you, and as we get older it is particularly important to practice self-care. Go Out Walking – Walking is a great way to keep up your fitness levels. Whether you want to walk to the shops each day or enjoy getting out in nature it is a huge benefit to your body, especially your heart. Practice Yoga and Meditation – As well as physical health, mental health is also important, and yoga and meditation combine both these things. Yoga helps with breathing and body strength. It can bring you a sense of peace and calm and is particularly helpful if you tend to be an anxious person. Meditation is also a great way to relax you, or to help focus your mind. You can do this from home as there are many apps which offer meditation and mindfulness for beginners such as the Calm app for example so give it a go!

Join a Club – If you like the social side of fitness, joining a club is great! Whether short mat bowls or cycling, these clubs are a fantastic way to meet new friends and to be fit and healthy. Clubs vary depending on where you live so see if you can join a local group on social media as people will probably be able to advise you of the clubs that are active in the local area.

Take up a New Sport – Retirement doesn’t mean the end of your sporting years! Whether you have loved a certain sport all your life but weren’t able to dedicate much time to it whilst you were working or are keen to try something new, there is something for everyone. Join a local cricket team or a football team if you like team sports or look into learning a martial art – as well as keeping you fit this also will help you to grow in confidence and be able to defend yourself should you need to.
